Pixellot vs. Veo
The battle between Pixellot and Veo has been covered before in previous Patent Forecast® insights but both companies continue to make headlines in the sports analytics sector. Both companies produce similar products, quality cameras with artificial intelligence for automating the broadcast and capture of live sporting events. Where the two companies differ is in their consumers, Pixellot produces a product that is geared towards high level professional sports leagues, and with its recent partnership with Genius Sports, it has managed to build a very impressive clientele. Veo’s strategy has been to target the lower level and semi professional sports leagues, which is reflected in the lower price point of its products as compared to Pixellot.
It was recently reported that Pixellot has raised $161 million in a series D financing round led by French football club Paris Saint-Germain. As for Veo, it was recently announced that it has raised $80 million in a series C financing round led by the Association of Tennis Professionals. Both Pixellot and Veo’s achievements are very impressive, and it is all only possible because of their patent portfolio, Pixellot has nine (9) patent assets in the sports analytics Patent Forecast® sector while Veo is trailing behind with two (2) patent assets in the sector. Their patent portfolios have been a critical reason behind their funding success but as the two companies battle for market share it will be interesting to see how it all plays out. Veo seems to need a partnership to help grow its client base and Patent Forecast® predicts that Disney would be a prime partner for Veo. With Disney’s acquisition of ESPN, it has become the leader in the sports analytics sector, and Disney hosts a lot of semi-professional and professional sporting events that do not require a high end production broadcasting setup, making for a very symbiotic partnership with Veo. Pixellot’s partnership with Genius Sports proved to be beneficial as it immediately increased Pixellot’s clientele and it would be foolish for Veo not take a similar route as its competitor.
