BlackBerry Announces New Business Unit: BlackBerry Labs

BlackBerry has announced a new business unit dedicated to cybersecurity research and development. This new business unit, BlackBerry Labs, will focus initially on machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) solutions for improving security in cars and mobile devices.

BlackBerry’s own foothold in the AI cybersecurity sector is fairly limited, with only a handful of relevant patents and applications in the user input, activity, and rules categories of the sector. However, their presence in the sector was bolstered last year with its acquisition of Cylance, an AI-powered cybersecurity startup.

Cylance has a heavy presence in the AI cybersecurity sector, with patents and applications relating to the threat detection and monitoring, analytics, classification, user activity, biometrics, prevention, and protection categories for the sector. Cylance’s integration into BlackBerry’s product offering is expected to be complete in 2020.
