Toshiba … Tires?

Toshiba Corporation has products and services ranging from power, industrial and social infrastructure systems, elevators and escalators, electronic components, semiconductors, hard disk drives, printers, batteries, lighting, and quantum cryptography. Its main focus is on personal computers, consumer electronics, home appliances, and medical equipment. However, in August 2021, it had its first application in the sector publish, for a tire communication apparatus that houses a pressure sensor to detect the air pressure of the tire.

Toshiba has had other products in the automobile industry, mainly ICs (integrated circuits) that are used in automotive applications, but not any that focus on tire pressure or any sort of sensors. Now that it has an application published, we expect to see some sort of deal between Toshiba and car and tire manufacturers that are in need of sensors or sensor data. Tire manufacturers such as Goodyear and Michelin, to name a few, are leading the space in patent assets. However, smaller companies like Toyo Tire Corporation, which only has five patent assets in the space, will need some sort of boost to compete in the space. Of Toyo’s five assets, one is in pressure with the remaining four in combination, load, tread, and ground contact/friction. Toyo could either attempt to work with Toshiba to continue innovating, or potentially buy the patent from Toshiba and expand its own portfolio. Whether or not Toyo partners with Toshiba, expect a large company like Toshiba to shake up the space!
