Drones connecting the US and China

With US-China relations recovering, DJI is actively positioning itself as an indispensable company in the US drone industry. In response to the Department of Homeland Security‘s warnings against Chinese commercial drones, the drone giant quickly defended itself in a letter clarifying its drone data privacy policies. DJI also stated that it plans to assemble its Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual drones in Cerritos, California, which could help the company meet federal requirements for sale. Building its products in the US may catalyze even greater patent activity for the company, who is already a top patent holder in this sector.

DJI currently holds the third largest patent portfolio in the UAV sector. While the company has significant presence across most technology categories, the company has little activity within Security and Defense and non-geofencing Infrastructure technology. Relevant to this week’s letters, DJI has some activity in the interactive video broadcasting space, including a recently published application.
