Growing Trend Towards Smart Socks

Analysis of the radian diagram suggests an increase in patents filed for “smart” socks, or socks with some sort of monitoring and communication ability. In just the last three years, 36 applications have been filed, and growth doesn’t look to be slowing. This includes all relevant documents for five of the six top assignees.

The trend here also seems to be related to medical monitoring. Sensoria makes a sock that tracks a user’s run and analyzes their cadence, Owlet manufactures a product to monitor the sleep of babies, and Palarum produces a sock that notifies caregivers when a patient gets out of bed. What these devices seem to lack is any method of injury prevention or enhancement of comfort.
