Phones + Cars = Drones

AT&T announced its new partnership with Uber for exploring 5G applications in the field of eVTOLs and cargo drones. They hope to combine the telecommunication company’s 4G and 5G expertise with the airspace management and flight operations expertise of Elevate, Uber’s air mobility business unit.

AT&T has a large and diverse patent portfolio in the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles sector, which unsurprisingly includes an issued patent for drones collecting data associated with wireless communications. On the other hand, Uber has much fewer patent documents in this sector, focusing on monitoring and optimizing the operations of drones and other autonomous vehicles. Their partnership is expected to generate more focused patent activity related to cargo drones leveraging 5G technology.
