Apple Looking to Improve Their Displays Using Enhanced Subpixel Geometry
Apple’s latest patent application publication describes a display system with super-resolution and extended-range rendering functionalities.
Apple’s display system offers improvements to gamut, dynamic range, and similar performance characteristics for display devices. Currently, wide gamut content displays, such as REC. 2020 video, require displays to make use of exotic single-wavelength laser-based primaries in order to accurately and full represent each primary color. Instead, wide gamuts can be matched using more than 4 primaries employing enhanced subpixel geometries. In addition, the enhanced subpixel geometries don’t impact conventional triplex rendering models (e.g., RGB) or rendering content.
Apple recently finalized a $200M investment in Japan Display, an LCD technology joint venture by Sony, Toshiba, and Hitachi. The investment is not a cash injection, but rather Apple’s agreement to purchase display equipment at Japan Display’s main smart screen factory. This could suggest Apple is planning on using Japan Display technology in the creation of their new enhanced display units.
Apple is currently the 7th largest patent and patent application holder in the Multi-Primary Color Sector.
