Sharp Partners With Nintendo

Sharp and Nintendo recently announced a new partnership centered around Sharp’s IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) display. Under the terms of the partnership, Nintendo will be using the IGZO display in all Nintendo Switch consoles.

The IGZO display uses a new type of thin-film transistor (TFT) backplane in the display, allowing for “electron mobility” that’s 20 to 50 times faster than traditional “amorphous silicon” IPS displays. Improved electron mobility further increases response times, potentially reducing response time from 4ms to 1ms.

As Sharp’s latest issued patent for an electrophoretic element and display device indicates, Sharp’s new displays offer improved color accuracy through subtractive color mixing. Red, green, and blue displays are produced through a subtractive color mixing technique using cyan, yellow, and magenta particles.
