Plastic pollution can be found from the summit of Mount Everest to the deepest parts of the ocean. The chemicals used in the production of plastic are having a negative effect on planetary health as the “safe limit for humanity” has passed. Plastic production needs to be reduced, so alternative packaging solutions are needed to correct the current trajectory of the planet. 

One example of an alternative packaging solution is New Frontier Foods Inc., also known as Ocean’s Halo. Ocean’s Halo offers a variety of seaweed products that contain zero plastics. Additionally, New Frontier Foods had a patent application for “Compostable Food Packaging System” published in January 2022. The compostable system is designed for brittle food products so it has the potential to apply to a large variety of products, including nori snacks. However, this is New Frontier Foods’ only patent asset in the Biodegradable Packaging Patent Forecast®, so New Frontier Foods will need to increase its patent activity to secure its position. 

Although the goods and services are different, there are other companies working to provide alternative solutions such as Loliware, SC Johnson, Cove, Paper Water Bottle, Lore Technologies, and Smurfit Kappa. Every single one of these companies is active in the Biodegradable Packaging Patent Forecast® – Loliware (7 patent assets), Cove (1 patent asset), Paper Water Bottle (8 patent assets), Lore Technologies (1 patent asset), and Smurfit Kappa (5 patent assets). These alternative solutions will only continue to grow as the desire and need to reduce the impact of plastic pollution increases. 

Expect partnerships and new filings to continue to grow over the next year as the environmental impact of a company’s product becomes more and more important in the purchasing decision of consumers.
