Plus Pulls Ahead in the Autonomous Truck Race

In early June we discussed Bridgestone Americas (Bridgestone Tire Corporation) and Kodiak Robotics partnership to produce autonomous trucks. As a result, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has announced a collaboration with Plus (formerly Plus.ai) to supply tire sensors for Plus’s autonomous trucks. Plus has also been on our radar in the last few months as it has partnered with NVIDIA to use its image recognition technology. It seems as though Plus has created the perfect storm and is wrapping up its autonomous truck manufacturing.

Early August of 2021, Goodyear had a patent publish in the autonomous tire sensors sector regarding a sensor system for monitoring tire wear. It comes as no surprise that Plus and Goodyear have decided to work together as Plus has continued to innovate and work toward producing an autonomous truck and the last thing it needed was smart tires. This is also a great deal for Goodyear as Bridgestone is one of its main competitors and has already reserved a spot in the autonomous truck race.

We should expect to see more tire companies partner with other autonomous trucking companies because most of these companies don’t have the patents to properly manufacture smart tires. It would not be surprising if we see Michelin or Continental work their way into the race. We will definitely be keeping an eye out as this is becoming quite the competition. Who will win? Our money is on Plus as it has been pulling out all of the stops to work with the best of the best when it comes to autonomous trucking technology.
