Another Compostable Coffee Pod without Patents. Sigh.

On July 2, 2021, Patent Forecast highlighted a compostable coffee pod battle between C-P Flexible, Nexe, and Keurig. Now it appears that another entrant has entered the competition, Blue Circle Packaging.

Blue Circle Packaging is a subsidiary of the ALPLA group, an Austrian global packaging producer. The first product line under the Blue Circle Packaging Label is home-compostable coffee capsules. The capsules are produced via injection molding and are suitable for home compost and organic waste bin.

There is no current indication that ALPLA will sell its compostable coffee capsules in the US. However, given that it operates on a global scale and has manufacturing in North America, ALPLA will most likely expand its offerings to the US. Currently, neither ALPLA or Blue Circle Packaging have any documents in the Biodegradable Packaging Patent Forecast®. Therefore, even if ALPLA has an unpublished patent application in the pipeline, it will need to be different from the products and patents of C-P Flexible, Nexe, and Keurig to secure exclusivity for ALPLA.

ALPLA should consider developing a partnership with one of the other coffee pod combatants to gain some leverage in the space. Follow the Biodegradable Packaging Patent Forecast® to see what actions ALPLA takes and what company enters the compostable coffee battle.
